J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: Yes I started and own BigGalsLingerie.com

 

LargeInCharge.com: Tell us where you were born?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and grew up in Arkansas. I am now back in Phoenix, Arizona and loving it!

 

LargeInCharge.com: Do you consider yourself a BBW?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I do consider myself a BBW.  I think I'm big.. and I'm not afraid to admit but I'm very comfortable with myself and think I look hot! I love myself..

 

LargeInCharge.com: Were you a big all your life?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I was a very skinny child.. but when I hit puberty.. that's when I started to fill out. I was probably a size 16/18 in highschool and am now a size 22.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Did your family and friends accept your size?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: My family has always accepted my size. They have never once made me feel bad about it..

 

LargeInCharge.com: How did your company get its name?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I was actually searching through deleted domains and saw the domain.. It fit exactly what I wanted to do and so I snatch it up. I think it was an excellent choice!

 

LargeInCharge.com: Who came up with the slogan...Where Curves are Encouraged? (which is original...and off the hook!. somebody was thinking)

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I did.. I was sitting at my computer.. thinking up a slogan.. and I thought to myself... that my store is a place that girls can come to where they don't have to worry about dropping 5 pounds here and there so they can fit into something.. we WANT you to have curves because we want you to be happy and accepting of yourself.. so we encourage your curves.. we love your curves.. and we think you are beautiful no matter what your size is!

 

LargeInCharge.com: Does you company do Fashion shows?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I have not done a fashion show yet but starting this summer I will be testing the waters by visiting some trade shows and bbw conventions.. my hope is to branch out into fashion shows, a multi city tour, and making the line available for home parties and sales.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Do you feel the fashion industry is doing a good job providing quality clothing for Big Women?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: there are some companies that are making an effort but there is not nearly enough! and I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. if you are looking for conservative clothing than there are plenty of stores that sell great quality items.. some a bit pricey.. but if you want hot trendy young and fresh.. cutting edge, provocative.. then you will be hard pressed to find something easily to fit that.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Do you feel Big Men have a better clothing selection than Plus Size Women?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I do.. but.. men are simpler to dress than woman.. I think..  I mean.. guys were shirts, pants, shorts and suits. There is a millions different ways to dress a woman.. but not nearly that many options when dressing a plus size woman.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Does you company ever sell Foot Wear?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: We do have a line of high heels and platforms.. they are a medium width shoe. we do not offer plain shoes, tennis shoes, or simple ordinary dress shoes that one might find at payless or a regular shoe store. we are about "going all out" standing out in the crowd.. showing off what we have .. and dressing it up to the hilt! and so our shoe line reflects this.. but. it's very sad to say.. I have not found a shoe company that offers the platforms and sandals and heels in a wide width. so we have a line of medium width shoes that will fit 90% of the girls out there...and if the foot is a wide width.. than most of the time ordering one size up will do the trick... we are constantly looking out for a exotic shoe line in a wide width and when we find it.. we will definitely offer it.

 

LargeInCharge.com:  Tell us about your latest fashions and any up & coming products?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: in the next month we will be unveiling our new 2005 line of custom made fashions. we will be offering some sexy corset style dresses, luscious new catsuits, and gowns, and some amazingly new sexy costume designs. stuff you are not going to be able to find anywhere else. in sizes up to 8X.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Is your lingerie washable?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: wash on the gentle cycle unless otherwise noted on the garment tag. most of the custom made styles should be dry cleaned but each garment has a care tag sewn into it for washing instructions.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Do you sell night wear for men?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: not at this time.. but maybe in the future.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your ($500.)modeling contest?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: the designer who makes our plus size custom styles was putting together a brand new catalog and wanted to use a real plus size girl.... not the size 10 and 12 girls that agencies try to sell as plus size. So we put out the word that we were looking for two sexy plus size girls to represent our new fashion catalog.. I'd have to say it was a 100% success and we found two gorgeous and beautiful bbw's .. the catalog and pictures will be out soon and can be seen on BigGalsLingerie.com in the very near future!

 

LargeInCharge.com: What qualifications do you look for when choosing a model?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: right now.. we just accept photos of customers who have bought our clothing.. loved it and sent in pictures of themselves. and if our customers send in photos of themselves we offer some discount programs on future purchases. we just need digital pictures of at least 600 pixels on the longest side taken with at least a 3.0 mega pixel camera.

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: when it's pictures of myself.. i take them myself.. otherwise..  the girls who send in their pictures have their own photographers or they also do it themselves.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Why did you decide to make clothing?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I love clothing! I love looking hot and sexy and I hate not being able to get what I want at an affordable and decent price.. I know if I want it.. than other Big Girls want it to!

 

LargeInCharge.com: How did your company begin?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: This is actually a true story.... one day I was at the mall.. walking around and such, when this skinny chick outside Victoria's Secret is standing outside their store and she says.. Hi! We are having a huge sale today.. why not come in and see what we have... I just stopped and looked at her.. I'm like.. WHAT????????????  I can't fit one leg into anything inside your store.. give me a break.. Then I thought.. Hmmmmmmmmm why does it have to be that way? Sexy flirty hot lingerie in only small, med, and large.. that 's BS!!! and so I decided to do something about it.. and founded BigGalsLingerie.com, then.. a few months later.. expanded to the custom made Club wear and Costumes Line.

 

LargeInCharge.com: When did you first start making clothes?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I myself have never made anything.. I wasn't blessed with such talent.. But.. I do know what I want to wear and what a lot of people want to wear. When I initially started the company 2 years ago.. I was selling Plus Size Lingerie... but wanted to expand in the Club Wear market because I know when I go out.. there's no chance in hell I'm going to be able to find a sexy tube top catsuit with the back cut out and a matching thong in size 4X or 5X (which is what I wear).. there's just no way that's available in the stores right now... but I found a trendsetting hot designer in Southern California who also had adapted some of her styles to the reach the 1X-4X markets. Eventually.. in working with the designer.. we got to the point where any of her hot sexy "Skinny Chick" styles could be make in 1X-4X sizes.. and then.. went to have them also available in 5X-8X sizes. The great thing about this line is that it's custom made. The garment isn't sewn together until it's ordered.. Which means.. you can pick whatever fabric and color combinations that you want from our huge selection of fabrics. If you need the length a little longer or shorter.. we can do that for you.. If you want to change it a bit.. more than likely.. we can help you.. You are truly getting a unique garment that is professionally sewn and made in the USA! It takes about 2-4 weeks to have your garment completed but it will be well worth the wait... and if you garment doesn't fit you properly.. you can exchange it a different size.. or an entirely different garment!

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: Custom orders take 2-4 weeks to produce and ship, other orders take about 4-10 days..

 

LargeInCharge.com: Did you construct the website with the release of your clothing or did it come after?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I developed the website when I decided I wanted to open up an online lingerie website.. I started the website first.. then sought out the clothing to offer on it.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Was the site it an automatic success or did it take time to kick off ?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I still consider myself a work in progress.. but of course.. it does take time to build traffic to your website and build a reputation.. I'm doing well so far.. and look forward to doing even better in the future... Every month after I started, I got a little bigger and a little better... so slowly but surely people are finding us, seeing what great styles we have to offer and love what we are doing for Plus Size Beauties.

LargeInCharge.com: Do you have a lot of men customers or is it true that men are shy when purchasing lingerie?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I have a lot of men customer's who buy for their girlfriends, wives, and favorite web amateurs.. But also had some that bought for themselves!

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: Our custom made costume selection is out of this world! Have you ever seen a Pimptress costume in a size 8X? J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I am the main model, but most of our models are just happy satisfied customers who sent us pictures of themselves in our garments. We offer a great discount program for those who do send pictures of themselves in our garments.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Do you ever have any modeling opportunities for the public?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: Occasionally.. we just ran a BBW Model Search for a print catalog coming soon and I have been contacted by some wholesalers who are expanding their lines to Plus Size and want to work with real Plus Size models... so as they become available I will post them on my website.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Name any other designers that you admire?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I don't have any specific designers in mind.. but I really love the self esteem T-Shirts at Mervyn's that come in Plus Sizes .. also I like to take a peek into Torrid and Fashion Bug every once in awhile. I'm a simple girl that likes to get wild every once in awhile.

 

LargeInCharge.com: What are the most important elements to running a successful Online  Lingerie Company...quality, comfort...what is important/ what is not?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie:   Most important to me is customer service... I know when I need to contact someone with a problem.. I hate to wait for an answer! and so.. I make myself available to my visitors almost 24 hours a day. I answer all emails .. most of the time.. as soon as they come into my inbox.. unless I'm asleep.. you will have answer within an hour.. I also have live chat available during normal business hours.. I try to solve all problems and answer all questions immediately to put your mind at ease and get you the information you want .. and get it to you fast!

 

     Quality is also one of our top priorities. Our garments are professionally produced with top quality fabrics and threads and sewn on factory grade machines. These garments will last! We also want our customers to be satisfied.. so if something doesn't fit right.. or if the customer does like how it feels or they just aren't happy with the fit or style they are welcome to send it back for an exchange.. WE just like to be contacted first so we can be on the look out for it.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Do you feel people of size have made progress in the last 10 years?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I'm not sure about that one.. I think.. that Big Girls were far better accepted back in the 1800's .. then skinny was in.. then curvy was in.. then anorexic was in.. I think it's a cycle.. I think now it's probably more accepted than a few years ago.. But who knows in the next 10 years?.. It probably wont' be again.. and that is A SHAME!.. I wish people could start seeing the person on the inside instead of what people look like on the outside.  

 

LargeInCharge.com: What changes do you think the internet has made for People of Size?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: I know the internet has given me way more confidence that has made me a more confident person in real life and has helped me see the beauty in myself.  The internet has put Big Girls in touch with other Big Girls and guys who love Big Girls.. so I think it's made a lot of us Bigger Girls realize that there is a whole world out there and we are limited to the small minded people we might come into contact with in our daily lives.

 

LargeInCharge.com: Give us some advice for People of Size who have low self esteem?

 

J.J. of BigGalsLingerie: The first step.. I think.. is to be able to see yourself for what you are.. and to accept yourself.  Once you can see the positive in yourself.. and see your beauty .. you will feel a lot better. There was a time.. when I thought I was ugly and I would probably never get married because I was too fat and too ugly. today... I'm probably bigger.. but I love myself.. I think I'm hot! and I love it... I just quit my negative thinking ..

surrounded myself with positive thinking and positive thinking people .. and learned that I am a person of worth and a person of beauty...THINK POSITIVE!

How to get active, when it is hard to move?

     Get active, that is what life is about, doing the things you want to when you want to.  But what happens when becoming active is almost impossible.  What happens when you get to a point when walking or standing is painful? When you know your going to pay for it the next day.  How do you cope with the fact that now the basic abilities in life are hard for you to do?  When your fearful for what people are going to think or say to you when you go out or pass by? When all you want to do is feel the breeze on your face, but the only way you seem to be able to do it is through your window while your sitting on a chair.  Or worst yet you rather sit on your comfy bed than on that little chair by the window.

 

     These are things that thousands of people are going through.  You become tired and you would rather just stay at home than drag your bulk outside.  Other than doctor's visits you don't really do much,  you have everyone come over to your house instead of taking a trip to there's.  It is just easier to do things in a way that makes it able for you not to move that much.  You think about the things you want to do then just give up because it takes to much effort.  That has got to stop because your giving up on your life.  There is a world out there that doesn't consist of your apartment or home.  There are fun things you could be doing!  Having lunch with a friend, window shopping, Checking out a new store, Finding some cool jewelry, Looking into some crafts shops and finding a new hobby, buying some things for your home, going to the movies, taking a voice class, dance class, maybe an learning a new language or instrument.  There are things to do if you look for them.

 

     Now how do you find the strength to do some of these interesting things?  I have broken it down into Four steps that you can follow at your own pace to learn and adjust your body to becoming active.  Yes this will take time, But if you start now by next spring you will be taking walks with your friends in the park and sitting on a bench while reading a cool book.  That is if you want to, you have to want to live a life outside, not stuck at home. 

 

Step 1 - Get Strong Mentally:  Ok... I know some of you are saying to yourself that you don't want to go outside. Your embarrassed by what people may think of you or say about you and your weight.  You need to realize something right now.  Everyone in the world is sitting around worrying about something.  There is someone right now that is dark skinned and thinks "I'm to black",  Someone who is very slim and thinks "I'm to Boney",  Someone who is light skinned saying "I'm to Pale".  My butt is to big or to small, My breasts are crooked or small or WAY TO BIG!,  My stomach, My Face, My Scar, My Penis size, My pimples.  The difference is they are not letting it change their lives. We are Fat People and guess what, we are part of this world, A BIG PART in more than one way.  Your going to have to push down your fear, stand up tall and exercise your right to live your life.  No one should stop you. Looks or comments should not be given acknowledgement. This will take time, but before you know it your only focus will be on what your doing and what fun your having and not on if anyone is looking at you.  You don't have a physical problem, your problem is mental.  If your going to let others rule your life and your going to let fear stop you.  You could lose 200lbs, and It wont matter what size you are because there will always be someone trying to rule you and something to be afraid of.  Seize control of your world and live it.

 

Step 2 - Strengthen your Legs:  Our Legs and feet are what keep us going and walking.  But there are a few more points that many of us are not working on, our joints.  We need to care for and move our legs on a daily basis.  I am going to give you a few exercises that I have found to help me build up my legs and keep me moving fluid and easy.  Even before you start to take walks and go out you should be doing these exercises.  You should do these exercises everyday weather you go out or not because they will help you greatly.  Most of these exercises can be done while sitting down or laying down.  I am not an instructor but I have found these exercises to help me keep going.  If you have bad knees, joint issues or other legs problems talk to your doctor first.

 

What do you need to do these exercises. At first your going to just do the exercises alone.  Later you will build yourself up to be able to use 5lb ankle weights and you can then move up to 10lb weights. 

• Exercise Number 1 -  From a sitting position with feet flat on the floor, Lift each foot in turn off the floor until your leg is straight.  You can easily do this many times and add the weights later on. 

• Exercise Number 2 -  From a sitting position with feet flat on the floor, Lift both feet off the floor until your legs are straight, then open your legs forming a V, Bring legs back together then put feet on the floor.  Do this again and again and add weights later. 

• Exercise Number 3 -  Laying straight on your side on a bed or flat surface, bend your knee and bring your leg up to your chest as far as you can,  then push your leg down straight and back as if your were skating.  Try to bring your knee up closer to your chest each time,  and try to push you leg farther back each time.   Do this as much as you can with out pain. This helps your hip joints and knees.  Roll over and do the same with the other leg.  Add weights later

• Exercise Number 4 -  Lay on your stomach with legs straight, Try to lift your whole leg up backward while it is straight,  You don't have to lift it much.  Lift each leg in turn, Imagine your trying to swim.  Add weights later.

Step 3 - Proper Foot Wear:  I can't tell you how many twisted, broken ankle stories I have heard about.  Large women trying to look cute in styles just not built to handle someone with weight.  I myself bought the wrong sneaker last year and badly twisted and tore many muscles and ligaments from my ankle up into my calf.  It is very important for large women to wear the proper shoes.  Styles come and go but your ankles won't! You only have them once and a bad injury will affect you for the rest of your life.  Not to mention recovery time and god forbid if you injury more than just your ankle or leg.  Believe me I know because I am dealing with my own injury and will from now on.

 

Recommended Tips and Foot Wear:

• Shoes should fit your foot properly never wear shoes to small or too big.

• Wear low heels or flats, there are many nice style coming out. Heels should be square.

• If you wear a higher heel, Heels should be solid and chunky,  If they are made of Rubber they give an added bounce to your step.

• All shoes should have some type or tred or traction marks on the bottom.  Smooth shoes insure you will slide all over the floor and fall.

• Don't crush your toes, square styles for shoes are much better.

• If your shoes are rubbing your feet or toes the wrong way.  Don't suffer with blisters! Buy some Adhesive Protection that you can stick to your shoes.  It is called Moleskin a soft fabric you stick in your shoe.  You can cut it to fit. Find it at any Rite Aid, Walgreen's, CVS, Wal-Mart.

• Sneakers should NOT be narrow styles,  Example:  K-Swiss, Keds,  while they look great and they make your feet look smaller, your not receiving the balance you need and your foot can turn at any moment causing injury.

• Best sneaker is New Balance they are perfect for a person of size. They keep you balanced and last for a long time.  They are also great as far as price.  They are recommend by podiatrists (feet doctors)

• Remember all your foot wear should have arch support.  If your shoe doesn't have arch support buy one size bigger and invest in some gel foot pads with arch support.

Step 4 - Survey your Area:  When you first start to get out and walk it is going to be hard.  But there are ways to get around walking long distances.  When you go out check your shopping areas.  Check for seating in stores, and benches in the street.  Check the local restaurants where you can get coffee or have lunch.  Go into shoe stores with seating and benches.  Even if you just look around and sit for a while it will help a lot.  Don't push yourself to hard take a rest when you need to.  You might have pain after an outing, you might feel stiff for a day or more.  But soon you will see that you will be able to walk farther with out a rest.  You will be able to rest less and walk more. You will have less pain and stiffness afterward.  Don't be ashamed that you need to rest or that you go through normal aches and pains.  Your moving and walking, getting out and enjoying your life and it can only get better from here on out.

Hip Hop Appreciation Week - Dedication to Big Pun!
     Last year, for Hip-hop Appreciation Week 2004, The LargeInCharge Fam organized a clothing drive for Homeless Teens in Covenant House (New York City).  This year we would also like to do something special.  In the near future we intend to announce another Teen project....I would like to first dedicate this Month's column to one of Hip hop's soldiers who have passed away...."Big Pun".

    

Christopher Lee Rios, better known to the world as Big Punisher (Big Pun).  Big Pun was not only the first Latin solo rapper to go platinum; he was a family man known to his friends as being extremely generous with a great sense of humor.  Big Pun has a great inspiration to many, and his memory will live on forever.

Ruben Diaz, Jr., Assemblyman of the 75th Assembly District of Bronx County who stated, “Pun was the Tito Puente of hip hop, establishing credibility for Latinos in a non-traditional music genre while maintaining commitment to his community.”

From Rap Raider: Big Pun was the first solo Latino rapper to go platinum, but sadly is another fallen soldier of the rap community. His death was due to health problems rather than violence. Taking his name straight from the Marvel comic, Big Punisher met Fat Joe in 1995 and impressed the fellow Bronx rapper. Fat Joe helped Pun land a deal with Loud and he released his debut album in 1998. A year later Pun & Fat Joe teamed up with many up-and-coming rappers to form Terror Squad.

From All Hip Hop: Big Pun's widow, Liza Rios, will announce the establishment of the Big Pun Foundation, today at a press conference in the Bronx, to mark the 3 year anniversary of the rappers passing. Pun passed away three years ago on Feb. 7

“My husband wanted his success to serve as an inspiration for youth in urban communities. He sought to set up a refuge for those in need of resources and mentors to foster their dreams. To fulfill his wish we have created this foundation in his memory,” Mrs. Rios told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

The not-for-profit organization seeks to improve the quality of life for inner city communities by implementing social development initiatives and resources for youth, adolescents and victims of domestic violence.

Programs and incentives offered at the Foundation will include workshops, community outreach efforts, conferences and special events.

To build the movement Internationally. We as HIPHOPPAS need to build the image of HIPHOP by having it recognized publicly with upliftment, empowerment and productive growth.
