Kathy Hernandez
Club Catalina
The
word is that in San Diego there is a BBW Entertainment Company who
is making big moves. As see in local papers, on the net and as
a Supporter of other Companies. Club Catalina is representing BBW's
and Admirers with passion.
Kathy Hernandez has been making waves and making a mark on the map
as far as acceptance and unity for the BBW community. Club
Catalina parties do more than bring people of size together, they
bring people of many nationalities together to have a great time.
Catering to the many needs and wants that a diverse crowd can have
has been a work that Kathy takes on.
Since November of 2007 Kathy has kept Club Catalina going and
reaches out to many in the Plus Sized Community. I know if I
ever get a chance to head out to San Diego Club Catalina is on my
list of places to go :)
Raqui
Interview
www.LargeInCharge.com: What is your name and where are you from
originally?
My name is Kathy Hernandez and I grew up in
Michigan and Florida but have been in San Diego County for 23 years
so I definitely consider San Diego County home for me.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Do you consider your
self a Person of size or an admirer?
Yes I am definitely a person of size and have
pretty much always been on the chunky or thick side as a child and I
have been a bbw since I have been in my teen years.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your
company
I own and promote Club Catalina in San Diego
which is a BBW/Size Acceptance Hip Hop Night Club where everyone no
matter what their size is more than welcome to come and dance with
me.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Who is the
owner/founder of your company?
I am the sole owner and founder of Club
Catalina. The Grand Opening of Club Catalina was on November 3,
2007 and I am open on Saturdays from 9 pm til 2 am. The cover
charge is $5 from 9 pm til 10 pm and after 10 pm the cover charge is
$10.
www.LargeInCharge.com: How did your company
get its name?
My name is Kathy and my nick name in Spanish
is Catalina, my ex husband and his friends called me Catalina and I
thought it was a great name for a San Diego Club also because we
have Catalina Island here.
www.LargeInCharge.com: How did your company
begin?
I started promoting a BBW night club over 3
years ago with a partner and loved promoting size acceptance and the
BBW Night Club, the people, the music and decided to start my own
club in July of 2007.
www.LargeInCharge.com: How long has your
company been in business?
Club Catalina had our Grand Opening on
November 3, 2007 so we have been open and in operation for 5 months
and we are growing all the time. I see a lot of new faces with each
week Club Catalina is open.
www.LargeInCharge.com: What territory do you
cover? Your state, other states?
Club Catalina is based in San Diego so we
generally have people from San Diego, Inland Empire, Riverside
County, San Diego also has a lot of people who come for business so
I get a lot of people e mailing from out of state letting me know
they will be in San Diego and would like more information about Club
Catalina so they can join us while they are here in town.
www.LargeInCharge.com: What type of publicity
has your company received?
I have been the cover story on San Diego City
Beats, an article in the Valley Center Roadrunner and an article in
La Prensa newspaper. I have also been on BBW Talk Radio and Palomar
College Radio in San Marcos. The more publicity that Club Catalina
and other BBW receive the better because there are a lot of people
who don't know about BBW Clubs and BBW events such as the NAAFA
Annual convention and the BBW Vegas Bash.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Has your company ever
been featured in print, radio, news, tv?
I have been the cover story on San Diego City
Beats, an article in the Valley Center Roadrunner and an article in
La Prensa newspaper. I have also been on BBW Talk Radio and Palomar
College Radio in San Marcos. The more publicity that Club Catalina
and other BBW receive the better because there are a lot of people
who don't know about BBW Clubs and BBW events such as the NAAFA
Annual convention and the BBW Vegas Bash.
www.LargeInCharge.com: How could someone with
talent approach your company if they wanted to perform at an event
of yours?
I have had rappers such as Tree and Jadox
perform for my group at midnight and share their musical talent with
us.
www.LargeInCharge.com: What is the key to
helping Plus Sized Entertainers achieve there dreams?
I think exposure is the main key to helping
Plus Sized Entertainers and letting everyone see how talented they
are.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your
first event (what kind of event) and was the turn out substantial?
Club Catalina had our first event on November
3, 2008 and we had 128 people come and party with us.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Do you hold events
regularly, and how many people attend?
Club Catalina is open on 3 Saturdays a month
for right now but I'm hoping to be open every Saturday in the summer
time. The average attendance is around 70 right now but I've had as
high as 128.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Do you promote other
types of events other than the ones you hold now?
I primarily promote Club Catalina but I spread
the word about all the other BBW Clubs in Southern California when
anyone lives outside of San Diego and make sure they have the other
BBW Night Clubs web addresses so they can party up North if that is
where they live.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Do you have any major
events coming up in the near future?
I have been chosen to host the NAAFA Annual
Convention in Los Angeles that is being held from July 8 to 13 so I
am very excited about being chosen to represent NAAFA at the Friday
night dance. I am also excited about the exposure that Club
Catalina will get on a national forum.
www.LargeInCharge.com: What are your long term
goals?
My Long term goals for Club Catalina are to
buy my own building so I can have more control over the plus sized
furniture, decor and be able to make decisions without asking the
management of a facility to be able to prepare for the Club Catalina
events. I would like to eventually be open at least 2 nights a week
as a BBW Hip Hop Night Club in San Diego, I would like to be open on
Thursdays for karaoke or be able to have my building available to
rent out for birthday parties, anniversarys or weddings on Sundays.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your
location and if it is comfortable for people of size?
Club Catalina is located at Padre Gold
conventiently off the 163 and Genessee Avenue exit. The club is
very spacious and the chairs are comfortable because they are open
so any sized person can comfortably sit in them without being
uncomfortable. The bathrooms have 3 stalls to each bathroom, We
have 2 pool tables, darts, computerized games to play also.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Who is your house DJ?
My house DJ is DJ Carlo and he plays a great
selection of hip hop, R & B, reggae, old school, rock, 80's and
salsa.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Do you promote events
in other states?
I don't promote events in other states but if
anyone asks about another BBW Night Club or BBW Organization in
their states I definitely give them their web site or have even
encouraged other people who don't have a BBW Night Club in their
city to start one on their own and give them suggestions on what
they should do to be able to have a successful BBW Night Club.
www.LargeInCharge.com: What is the response
you receive from the BBW / BHM community?
The response from the BBW/BHM Community has
been extremely positive and I have a large group of men and women
who constantly tell people they meet anywhere they go about Club
Catalina, they volunteer to help me decorate, charge cover and give
me great suggestions on themes for the club.
www.LargeInCharge.com: How can the readers at
www.largeincharge.com help support your company?
I think the readers at Large in Charge can
help support Club Catalina by telling their friends, family and co
workers about Club Catalina in San Diego and if they live in the
area or are visiting San Diego to come and dance with us, socialize
and make new friends.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Do you have any other
companies or entrepreneurs that you admire or collaborate with?
I have a deep amount of respect and admiration
for Cher Rue, previously of Club Bounce, because she has been a
great friend of mine for many years and has always been there with
suggestions and shared what she knows works and doesn't work for a
BBW Night Club. I also collaborate with the other BBW Night Clubs
and re post their bulletins and tell people about their clubs such
as: The Butterfly Lounge in Costa Mesa, Club Bounce in Long Beach
and Club Siren in the City of Industry.
www.LargeInCharge.com: What is the key to
giving a successful People of Size Event?
I think the key to being successful is having
a great group of people who are there to have fun, make friends and
dance. I think the people that come to the club definitely make
Club Catalina what it is, without the people and the friendship than
I don't think Club Catalina would be continuously growing.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your
clients?
My clients are a diverse group, we have an age
span that extends from 21-55 for the most part. We are also a
diverse racial group which I love, hispanic, african american, asian,
caucasion, mexican, african, puerto rican, jamaican and haitian.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Who are some of your
business or influences that you admire?
I have a deep
amount of respect and admiration for Cher Rue, previously of Club
Bounce, because she has been a great friend of mine for many years
and has always been there with suggestions and has shared what she
knows works and doesn’t work for a successful BBW Night Club. I
also collaborate with the other BBW Night Clubs and re post their
bulletins and tell people about their clubs such as: The Butterfly
Lounge in Costa Mesa, Club Bounce in Long Beach and Club Siren in
the City of Industry and Club Sinsations in Las Vegas and their new
Los Angeles location.
www.LargeInCharge.com: Give on sentence that best describes your
company?
Club Catalina is
where the Sexy and Classy BBW’s Party in San Diego!!
LargeInCharge.com: Where are you from and what is your current
Location?
Born and
raised in Staten Island, New York
LargeInCharge.com: Can you give us some information about
yourself (Age, Height, Size, Nationality, Marital Status,
Children, etc.)?
I am 29yrs
old My birthday is October 18th I will have my dirty 30 god
willing this year. I am 5'10, African American Engaged to my
son's father Al Nazon aka BIG VEGAS. We recently set our
wedding, May 23, 2009-- I am very excited for the bachelorette
party LOL just kidding sweetie. I have one son Justin Avery
Nazon. And God could not have blessed us with any other. I
love them so much.
LargeInCharge.com: Were you a big child, or did you gain weight
later in life?
I actually
was a very skinny child. Flat chest always wanted big breast. I
guess that old saying holds true be careful what you wish for.
And as I got into high school I started gaining weight. I didn't
really mind because it was always in the right places if you
know what I mean.
LargeInCharge.com: (If you gained weight later in life) what
caused you to gain weight and how did you feel about it?
I actually
gained a lot of weight when I was pregnant with my son. Ladies
just because you are pregnant you do not have to eat for two
please believe me. I lost most of the weight right after because
I started to breast feed. But I stopped after two months. But
just being home and not working, which was a mutual decision
between Al and I, it just got crazy. I gained all the weight
back that I lost and then some. I was a little depressed because
I wasn't used to looking like this.
LargeInCharge.com: What made you decide to enter the
LargeInCharge model search?
Because since
I was in my late teen early twenties I would always joke and say
I could definitely be a plus size model. but you know what they
say there is sometimes truth in jokes. And after I had my son I
like many other mothers I thought my life was over. You know you
can't hang out anymore with your friends have alone time with
yourself and just your significant other. But I soon came back
to my senses. I realized if I am going to teach my son, nieces
and nephews about life I have to live it. My favorite quote"
Never regret anything because at one point its what you really
wanted,"
LargeInCharge.com: Did you find it a hard journey to be accepted
for your size?
I must say
No. I can't depend on anyone to accept me. I accept myself
through all my hardships and faults. No one has to live with me
for the rest of my life but me. And I can only be me.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you find acceptance among your family and
friends?
Oh yes,
that's one thing I can say all of my family, my close friends
which are like my family even co-workers have been so supportive
and helpful, just really great. I don't have any stories like
many others have had of how people have turned on them or put
them down. I have been so blessed to have so many people around
me who love and support me. And I must say that everything that
I do, I see that I am encouraging other women not just plus size
women to just be themselves. And step out of their shells and I
am just so glad that they see a little part of me in themselves
and that is all I could ask for.
LargeInCharge.com: What would you say inspires you most in life?
My fiance, I
tell everyone that really knows me, that I prayed for him? And
since I met him I am not going to say that he completes. But
since I met him I have become more, of who I really am.
LargeInCharge.com: What is your primary job?
A Freelance
Court Stenographer ( a court reporter)
LargeInCharge.com: How did you get into this line of work?
A women came
to my high school and did a demonstration and talked about how
much money you could make and that was it. It wasn't a dream of
mine but for now a reality.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you find acceptance in the work force?
Yes, But it
is not for me. I am a people person I love to talk to people
interact with people and court reporting you just can't do that
for me. I still work at he hospital part-time for the benefits.
LargeInCharge.com: What changes do you believe should take place
for Large People in the work force?
They need to
stop sleeping on us big people. Please anything they can do we
can do better. And don't be just because I am big I can out
dress them on my worst day. LoL
LargeInCharge.com: What do you think about the fashion industry
for big sized clothing?
I think
if your going to do big clothes. Do big clothes got damn it.
Don't stop at 14-16 do the damn thing and go all out. They want
to joke on what we wear the floral dress and the stretch pants
than do something about. That's how I feel. The plus size
community has a lot of purchasing power.
LargeInCharge.com: What do you wish to see change with the
fashion industry?
I like to see
somebody like me on every channel if not me. LOL Most women are
not skinty yes I meant to say s-k-i-n-t-y. They are real women
with real looks real responsibilities real stress, and just
trying to make it.Their the one's I see everyday not these
models skinny models in Paris. Also, our plus size sistas
understanding this is first-impression- image-based business.
They have to be able to sell the whole package.
LargeInCharge.com: What changes do you think will happen if plus
sized modeling for men and women were to expand?
It will be
the Big Girls and Guys TAKEOVA!!! It would definitely be a
movement. They wouldn't know what to do with us. They can't
keep us in this little box forever. Trust me a change is going
to come. And I know I will be alive to see it. It would also
have a positive impact for the plus size youth coming to have
better sense of self-worth.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us some of the places you buy your
clothing from.
Torrid, I
love love fashion to figure they have everything the skinty girl
stores have. Ashley Stewart.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us one of your secret beauty tips.
Have
exuberant great sex safe sex with some one you love. And oh
yeah drink lots of water.
LargeInCharge.com: Give us some tips on how to have a
successful Photo shoot. What should models be prepared for?
Pay attention
and listen to what the photographer and designers are asking of
you. Different temperaments, personalities, and if you don't
have your stuff together you can be asked to go home. Also, be
mindful of what you eat three days prior. High sodium foods tend
to cause water retention (not good!!)
LargeInCharge.com: Look at Size acceptance five years ago...
look at size acceptance now. What changes do you see?
I see a lot
more plus size designers even if old navy doesn't want us to
shop in their store anymore only online?
LargeInCharge.com: What changes do you think will happen five
years from now with size acceptance?
God willing
Bryant Park!!!
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your goals as far as modeling
and other interests.
My goals as
far as modeling. I just want to be the best I could be. Not to
sound cocky or anything but I believe I am my only competition
Its not fair to me or god to be jealous of who someone else is.
Its like a slap in face to god to say that he didn't know what
he was doing when he made me. I strive to be better then I was
yesterday, last week. last year. And I look back and say damn I
made a lot of mistakes but I will be damn if I don't learn from
them. I am doing the first ever plus size on flea market and
fashion show in Staten Island. some people say when they come
to Staten island it doesn't seem like any of the other five
boroughs which is true its not. but I would like for plus women
here on Staten Island to see the what real women look like, and
see that there is a place for us in these five boroughs to. shit
LargeInCharge.com: Can you tell us about an inspirational moment
in you life that made you feel good about your size.
I really
don't have just one I have many But I was really inspired at
last year's Art of Curves fashion show. I never seen so many
plus size women with different types of swagger and body
shapes it was great to watch.
LargeInCharge.com: Is there a person in your life that makes you
keep going?
My son, I
look at his little face and god know he drives me crazy at
times. But I am like I responsible for him I can't just give up,
my life is not just my own.
LargeInCharge.com: What advice would you give to other people of
size who want to model?
You've got to
believe in yourself you can't wait for some one else to believe
in you. and just do the Damn thing.
LargeInCharge.com: What plus size figure do you admire?
Lol I tell
her this all the time Jeannie aka Ginger Her walk first of all
is crazy. But she is just mad down to earth and she tell it how
it is.,

Vegas Bash Sadness
Written By: Raqui
If you read this months feature you can tell I was so happy to be in
Vegas this year for BBWNetworks Vegas Bash. The Biggest event
for People of Size this annual event has been described as life
changing. This year was lucky 13 and I hope to make it to the 14th
annual next year.
Though I was a happy time and I think of all the fun I had, I feel a
lot of sadness. I felt sadness because I met so many people
who I have made a connection with. Those who I knew of before
attending The Bash and those who I just met while there. I
dreamed last night that I was at The Bash and I was seeing the
friends I made and talking and laughing. Making plans for
Lunch and Dinner, hugging them and smiling. I realized that I
feel a great deal of loss now being home. I want to see those
people who with just a look in the eye we connected in some way.
Those who I shared moments with and felt like we knew each other
forever. I spent my last two days at The Bash crying on and
off with happiness and sadness.
Most don't take me as a very emotional person, they believe I am
completely upbeat. I would say I am very passionate, and
with that the feelings I had at Vegas were just compounded with the
fact that at some point I had to go home. I had to leave the
people who I wanted to see more of. I could see my life filled
with them and their faces. Hanging out and doing things
together.
But a part of me realizes that it is a gift, to have a place to go
to and meet all the people who you only kinda know from online.
That fact that you have friends from all over the country is amazing
because with out the internet we wouldn't know each other. I guess
we call it bittersweet and I will always remember the wonderful
times I had. I hope to make it next year because I now cant
imagine not going.
Super Sized Sounds will be a Music Column that will feature those
who are in the industry or up and coming who are size positive.
Giving recognition to the plus
sized people who are out there and showcasing themselves.
Reviews, Interview, News and more from our new writer Super Sized Spanishfly Lynx.
Lynx
Garcia, also known as "SUPERSIZE SPANISHFLY", is a Latina BBW from
Queens NYC. Lynx is an activist speaking out against size
discrimination and began performing back in 1996 at social events
for big beautiful women and big handsome males and their admirers.
Her special mixture of sound held true as she sang, spat, danced and
performed spoken word, soon she was in demand by
Big and Beautiful parties nationwide. Lynx taking her "look"
and sound mainstream was rejected because of her size. She
did not let this break her spirit, hurt her confidence or minimize
her drive. Instead she rose up and started a public access show
(LYNX' LAIR) aired in Queens on TIME WARNER QPTV . Combination of
comedy and sexy style, she showcased underground artists of all
walks of life. The response to her show was PHENOMENAL....in less
than a year she has showcased many artist, some who moved to bigger
and better things.
Currently Lynx has caught the attention of Joey Mekkah of BLACK
SOLARIS ENTERTAINMENT and found herself on the Grandmaster MELLE
MEL's SOLO ALBUM "MUSCLES" featured on the hot latin hip-hop track
called 'DIMELO", she is the only collaboration on the album. Lynx
recently has started her own radio show on EXTRAVAGANGSTARADIO.COM
called Ladies Night. EXTRAVAGANGSTARADIO is #1 on the
itunes network.

Confession - To a Beautiful
Woman
by Emily Suzanne
Smiltneck
If you heard what I said about you, I’m sorry. I was
just sitting around with some friends when your name came up, and I
had to speak my mind. I didn’t know you were right around the
corner.
I don’t really hate you because you’re stupid. I don’t
even know for sure if you are stupid, although I suspect that
you might be. But maybe not. I wish I knew for sure that you were,
to be honest. Then I would have something that you don’t.
Like I said, I’m sorry if you heard me say I hate you,
but that doesn’t mean I’ll pretend I didn’t say it. And I won’t
pretend I didn’t mean it, either. It hurts me to say that, probably
more than it hurts you to hear it. I know that’s a terrible cliché,
but it’s true. I feel judgmental and petty and cruel. I don’t want
to hate you. I don’t want to hate anyone. I can’t help it. Maybe
I’m just insecure.
I hate you because you know how to wear high-heeled
shoes. They make you look longer and leaner and more vampish than
you always do anyway. They make men practically drool as they watch
you walk across a room. They make your hips wiggle and sway when
you move, just the way a woman’s hips are supposed to wiggle and
sway. My hips don’t delicately wiggle and sway, they bounce and
flop and galumph with every step. Nothing I do will ever make a man
look at me the way they look at you when you cross a room in heels.
I hate you because you don’t have to censor yourself
into “coolness.” You can say whatever cutesy, girly things you want
to, even to men, just because they like to look at you. The other
day, you told an entire group of men exactly how many pairs of shoes
you have, and why you need each pair, and they just rolled their
eyes and smiled in amusement. I laughed and said I had just as many
and they sighed in disgust and looked away. The mere mention of
your new haircut or the sweater you bought last night brings them in
droves to gaze upon your beauty and shower you with compliments.
When I proudly mention my new acquisitions, they dismiss me as
insignificant and change the subject to cars or football. Men are
your audience, not mine. One more reason that I hate you.
Oh, and I hate you because you know how to wear makeup,
too. You somehow know which colors match your skin tone, accent
your lips, bring out the blue in your eyes. Your skin is clear and
blemish free and perfectly decorated at all times. When I complain
to men about the fact that women have to wear makeup to impress
them, they tell me I’m wrong. They tell me they don’t even notice
things like hair and makeup and nail polish. They lie. I know this
because it is women like you, smoothly made up and airbrushed to
perfection, that attract men.
Maybe it’s because of all the attention you garner for
yourself that you have mastered the art of flirting so completely.
A flash of your smile, a dip of your head, a few teasing words and
every man within a mile turns into a blithering idiot who can’t
think of anything but you. You always know exactly the right words
to say so that every one of them is under the impression that you
think he’s the most wonderful man in the world. I hate it when you
do that, especially to men you aren’t interested in. The ones you
don’t want might be the same ones other women don’t want, too, so I
could have a chance with them. But you pretend you’re interested
even if you’re not, and what man is going to give me, plain and fat
and not at all sophisticated, a shot, if he thinks he might have one
with you?
It never ceases to amaze me the way you can dance right
up to the line between innocent flirtation and inappropriate sexual
suggestiveness, tickle it with your toe, and then back away without
every crossing that line. I’ve studied you carefully hundreds of
times and still I can’t mimic your technique. When I think I’m
being outrageously flirtatious, men can’t even begin to pick up on
my cues. And when I try and give it that little extra punch, I
manage to dive right over that line you so expertly avoid. You draw
men toward you even as you push them back; I make them turn and run.
I hate you because you don’t know things and that’s
okay. You play the role of innocent woman in need with finesse. I
don’t know how you do it, because every time I’m caught in a moment
of uncertainty, I look stupid, not cute. Instead of looking like I
need a big, strong man to help me, I just look like I’d be too much
trouble for any man to deal with. It doesn’t seem fair. My
intelligence is the only thing I have going for me, and intelligence
isn’t something men seek in the first place. Which means, of
course, that I have to rein it in at times so I don’t scare anyone
away. I envy you. It would be nice if I could pull off the damsel
in distress routine the way you can, or even just ask for help every
now and then.
Most of all, I hate you because you are loved. I hate
you because you are wanted, desired. Because at the end of the day,
you have a man waiting to hold you, caress you, just be with
you. You’re engaged to a man who treats you like a queen, but that
doesn’t seem to be enough for you. You have the undivided attention
and admiration of your fiancé and of every other man you’ve ever
met, but you always strive for more. Why can’t you at least leave
my friends alone? I’ll let you have every other man in the
world if you will just leave my male friends alone.
It only seems fair that I should be able to have one or
two guys for myself. I can accept that they will never be attracted
to me the way they are to you, and that they will never touch me,
hold me, love me. That’s just part of who I am. But I have their
attention when you are not around. Then you prance into the room
begging for backrubs and sitting on laps and flirting and strutting
and laughing like you have somehow earned the right to be the center
of every man’s world, just by being beautiful.
I hate you because you ask for these things and because
you get them. When you are around, I do not exist. You have a man
waiting at home to give you everything he has. Please don’t take
away the little male attention I get. I’m begging you. It’s all I
have, all that makes me a worthy human being. You have everything.
Just let me have something.
I admit that I said I hate you. I’m sorry if you heard
me. I’m sorry if I hurt you. But there are a thousand men lined up
to comfort you, so I think you’ll live. You can handle hearing that
I hate you because of how you look, because of how you are. Maybe
it will give you just a little bit of an idea what it feels like to
be me. You know the pain you feel right now, from finding out that
one person in the world doesn’t like you? That pain is my whole
life, and there is no one who is willing to hold me in his arms and
comfort me. When I try to explain how I feel, no matter who I may
be explaining to, I am told that I should stop being insecure, that
I should be bold and confident, get over it. But it isn’t that
easy. I need a little help, a little encouragement. A little bit
of what you have.
I know you don’t understand. You can’t. If you did,
you would be perfect. And then I would hate you even more.
Labor Day always
came with a bittersweet taste. That is to
say it was a great time to cook out, but it also marked the
ending of summer. If find that these days I
really enjoy the 6AM-9PM (or later) daylight hours.I have taken the time to relish the spring and summer
this year.I savor each late night light
hours like honey knowing that soon (all too soon) we’ll be back
to darkness in the middle of the afternoon.
We’ll be spending more time indoors just waiting for the long
summer days again.
Since Labor Day is
the last noted party time of the cook out season I wanted to
send you out a truly great recipe.Yes,
there are the diehards who actually stand in the snow to cook
out, but as we get older, our feet get colder and we can’t stand
in the snow to have another grilled steak.
I’ve include a rub
recipe so that you can use it all year long.
It works well on the grill as well as in the oven.
We see the
community pool emptied, kids are back in school, the lakes are
dropped to a lower level, and it seems as the world around is
folding up the tents until next summer. The
great thing about these recipes is that can work all year long.If you get to longing for those summer tastes dazzle your
friends with the rub treatment and traditional summer foods in
the winter to tide you over until the spring comes again.
I think it’s during
the coldest months that we appreciate the heat of summer the
most. It’s a lot like not appreciating being
healthy until you get a really bad cold.
This last part of summer, go out into the night and appreciate
the spectacular world around us and breathe in the cool summer
night. There’s something about the night air
at this time of the year that brings contentment to me.It settles me, which after and all too short spring and
summer, I really need now.Soon the leaves
will turn, and October will bring the start of the holidays.Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s will
pass in rapid succession on our way back to spring again.Somewhere in the darkness and cold of the winter months,
I know I’ll be longing again to fill my lungs with the air of
the sweet southern summer night.I’ll be
longing for peace and contentment once again that only this time
of year can bring me.
I welcome you all
to the fall.
May God Bless Each of you.

Cher was born in Los
Angeles California in 1955. Being adopted by wonderful parents she
grew up in the city of Encino, and was always surrounded by loving
caring family and friends. Growing up with a thin mother, who was
always trying to get Cher to lose weight, diets of all types,
sending her to fat camp, bribing her, and
not ever having sweets in their home.
Growing up Cher never was lacking in friends and boyfriends who
loved her personality and her kindness.
Guys in her life always were saying your so pretty but why don't you
lose some weight. This she heard all of her life but her weight just
would go up and down.
Cher has always loved seeing others happy and helping others to find
their inner self and beauty.
Ten years ago, she found the plus size community and she knew this
is where she would focus on helping others who were like her and had
some of her experiences and pain that she went through.
Cher has been in the community working with others for size
acceptance. She was seen on "Dr.Phil, "Good Morning
America","Entertainment Tonight", "Russian, British, Japanese,and
Viet Vietnamese Television". Also a documentary filmed at the Las
Vegas Bash on the Travel channel, and Current TV, a online station,
with numerous radio interviews talking about size acceptance.
She was a promoter for the number one BBW hip hop club in
California, and seeing people come into the club and make new
friends and feel good about themselves warmed her heart.
Her love for helping others to feel better about themselves and to
help mainstream accept the plus size community is her focus and
goal. She is Vice President of "Hollywood Cure For Pain" a celebrity
movement to help those who suffer in chronic pain. She is now
showing mainstream that "Big Girls can rock the Red Carpet"! Besides
being a wife, mother and activist, playing with her Chocolate Lab

Better Roles for Bigger People ... It's Possible with
Stephanie Baham
Sookie - Melissa McCarthcy /
Doug - Kevin James /
Newman - Dwayne Wright
So who was that perky plus sized chef on Gilmore Girls?
That's the question I asked myself every time I watched Gilmore
Girls. The character of Sookie St. James was a talented chef, a big
girl & a big part of that show. I found out I was watching the
delightful Melissa McCarthy, cousin of former Playboy model, Jenny
McCarthy. (Personally, I think Melissa looks lovelier).
I remember the WB was notorious for it's shows about the angst of
young adults. Young skinny adults. But when Gilmore Girls hit the
airwaves, I was happy to see they actually cast a woman of size in a
positive leading role.
But then I began to wait to THAT story line....you know...THAT story
line where they decide to "tackle" her "weight issue." I was
waiting for the fat axe to fall. I saw story lines about her
character's career, marriage, friendships....but no "fat" story
line! Had I been spared the same old "oh my gosh she's having an
issue with her weight" episode? Well, at least I hope so. I didn't
see every single episode of Gilmore Girls, but I saw a lot and I
don't remember a "omg I'm fat" episode.
Another thing I noticed about Melissa's character on Gilmore Girls
was her sense of style. Sookie St. James wore some of the cutest
outfits with fun colors and styles. It was the first time I noticed
a plus sized character was given a sense of fashion. Usually the
big girls are wearing sweaters and the big guys are wearing Hawaiian
shirts. But Sookie had outfits that would rival Carrie Bradshaw
from Sex And The City. Take that Manhattan!
Even her character's hair had it's own personality. It wasn't
pulled down around her face as if they needed to hide the fullness
of her beautiful cheeks.....Sookie St. James was usually sporting
her pigtails and bandanna.
It appeared to me that the WB actually took time to cultivate this
character and make her beautiful on more then one level. Her
character was likable, entertaining, stylish and living a "normal
life" without some obsessive weight issue. This is the type of
thing that I really look for in a plus sized character. It's not
enough to me to just see a big girl on the screen. My hope is that
big girls (and guys) continue to get leading roles that are
quality...not just "the fat chick" or "the fat guy."
Fortunately, I think Hollywood is slowly coming around. We've got
great characters on tv such as Doug from Queen of Kings played by
Kevin James. Or Newman from Seinfeld played by Dwayne Wright.
Newman might not be the most likable....but he's a great character!
It's not enough for me to turn on the tv and say "Hey look there's a
big girl/guy on this show! That's great!" It will only be great if
the character is great.
There are some movies/tv shows that do tackle the "weight issue".
And that's fine, that's a part of life. But it's not the only
part. And it shouldn't be the only thing that Hollywood chooses to
put on the screen.
About 15 years ago I was a young aspiring actress in the Theatre
Department of California State University, Long Beach. And in every
audition I went into, I always had that little voice saying "what if
you're too fat?" No director ever told me that...but it always stuck
in my mind. Pretty soon I began to get roles that I thought would
have been reserved for skinny people. And that tells me there are
some directors out there who weren't just looking for skinny.
When I got the bug for dancing, I was sure I was going too deep into
skinny people territory. But soon I got some dance roles that were
more than just doing the hokey pokey and turning myself around. My
crowing glory was getting the role of Cha-Cha in a production of
Grease. I was 22 years old and a size 18. The guy that played
Danny was a 16 year old who was 6' tall and skinny as a pole. This
kid must've had a 20" waist! And the choreographer was a size 4. I
was surrounded by the skinniest people in the cast! But the
choreographer believed in my skills more then I did. She didn't
doubt me for a second. And with her guidance we had a great number
and I'll never forget how to do the Hand Jive as long as I live.
That's when I realized that in some places, people don't see size.
They see talent. Maybe one day the entire entertainment industry
will be like that. As a matter of fact, I'm sure of it. All we need
is time, passion and we need to live large!
I am a former plus-size model and stage performer. I have written
articles that have appeared in local newspapers, college magazines
and I was a sports editor for my school newspaper. Currently I have
a book coming out in May 08, How to Make a Living Without a Job: the
Guide to Professional Temping. It will be available online through
Amazon and can be ordered through Barnes & Noble or Borders. I split
my time between the Bay Area, CA and Houston, TX.

British News Personality scolded by overweight job
centre worker who posed for Lucian Freud after calling her 'Fat Sue'
UK news reporter Katie Derham infuriated an overweight job centre
worker who posed naked for Lucian Freud live on TV yesterday by
referring to her as Fat Sue.
ITV1 newsreader Katie, 37, upset 51-year-old Sue Tilley who posed
for the life-size painting - that fetched a record £17million ($34M)
at auction - after she thought Fat Sue was her nickname.
Katie introduced the segment: "When a job centre worker posed naked
for a life-size painting for renowned artist Lucian Freud, Fat Sue,
as she's affectionately known, said he got value for money because
there was a lot of flesh.
"Sue Tilley, so gloriously painted now joins us from her home in
central London."
"Sue, thanks ever so much for talking to us. You're a record
breaker, how does that feel?"
"Yes, it is rather nice. But I'm not really happy when you call me
Fat Sue, because that is not my name. And I'd appreciate it if you
didn't call me that thank you" she fumed.
Blushing Katie groveled: "I absolutely apologize unreservedly - we
thought it was an affectionate nickname given by you. But if not
then you absolutely have the right to pick us up."
Sue replied: "No it wasn't."
An ITV source said: "Katie looked like she wanted the ground to
swallow her up. It's every presenter's nightmare to make a gaffe
like that on live broadcast.
"Katie didn't intend to be mean - she's always been regarded as
nice."
The painting broke the world auction record for a work by a living
artist in the Christie's sale at New York's Rockefeller Centre.
Tilley corrected Derham live on air forcing the newsreader to
apologize.
Benefits Supervisor Sleeping beat the previous world auction record
for a work by a living artist, held by Jeff Koons' Hanging Heart
(Magenta/Gold), which fetched £11.3 million ($22.5M) last year.
The 1995 Freud painting depicts Sue Tilley, now 51, sleeping on a
dilapidated sofa.
Ms Tilley, now a Job centre manager, said: "I'm thrilled. I still
can't believe such a bizarre thing has happened to me. It hasn't
sunk in properly."
Muse: Lucien Freud met Tilley in a nightclub 20 years ago and spent
nine months painting her
Asked how she felt about posing nude, she said: "At first, I was a
little bit embarrassed but after a while I just got used to it and
it became a completely normal thing to do, like going to the
doctor."
"I never weigh myself because I can't be bothered," she said.
Asked if she would ever sit for another artist, Ms Tilley said it
was "hard to know where to go" as she had "started with the very
best".
It was the first time Freud's Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, which
was the highlight of Christie's New York Post-War and Contemporary
Art Evening Sale, had appeared at auction.
The 85-year-old British artist first painted Tilley in Evening In
The Studio (1993), for which she had to lie in an uncomfortable pose
on a bare floor.

My Confessions of Being
a Big Beautiful Woman
She walk real
proud, Her confidence,
has your head
bowed,
Her image doesnt
reside in mumu's and flower dresses,
she loves clothes
that cling to her tripple D breastesses,
She's a 3 outta
3,
She don't lack,
Spiritual,
Mental,
or Physical
Maturity,
When you hug her,
Its deeper than a
surface tap,
her body is
filled with love,
and extra cushion
for you to grab,
Her smell is so
sweet,
it make you wanna
linger,
and her first
impression,
Will Make you a
little eager,
Independant, and
nothing less,
Her life stays
full of ambition
and success, Yea,
She is Full and
Sexy,
With plenty to
feed the greedy,
and for you
skinny hatin sistahs,
she willin to
donate,
some for the
needy,
She loves a good
cerebral -cortex penetration,
and opens her
mind up,
to deep mental
stimulation,
By the time she
finishes the conversation,
her draws wont
be the only thing your chasin,
so I advise a
little discretion,
and lets not
forget to mention,
her passion for
the kitchen,
Puttin together
creative dishes,
like,
white rice and
gerk chicken,
wearing nothing
but a thong
and six inch
stilletos,
She'll have you
cravin her strawberry jello,
and she got that
good good,
to make your
attitude mellow,
juicy, is only
one word,
She got enough to
water the earth,
body made so
close,
youd think she
was a virgin,
and the spasms
in your back,
will have ya doin
more than splurgin,
nothin about her
is uncertain,
what you see, Is
what you get,
A full-figured
woman,
Proud of her
thickness....
