Big World Wear
Written By: Raqui
Vegas was definitely a treat when I met Joe Reaves and he is the
Super Man with Tee Shirts for the Plus Sized Community!
Not only are they priced well but quality is wonderful and better
than many shirts I own. These shirts made for longevity,
printed with care and a big dose of PLUS POSITIVE ATTITUDE are
snatched up quicker than hotcakes on Sunday Morning.
Joe is not only a remarkable person with a plan but a sweetheart as
well. I am proud of him and his work, so let me introduce you to...
BIG WORLD WEAR
Interview with Joe M.
Reaves CEO of Big World Wear
LargeInCharge.com: What is your name?
Joe
M. Reaves, CEO of BIGWorldWear.com
LargeInCharge.com: Where are you from and what is
your current Location?
I
am from and our company is located in Chicago, IL.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you consider yourself a BHM,
BBW or a SSBBW, SSBHM?
I
consider myself the Sexist BIG man alive! Do you have an acronym
for that? LOL! That’s not cockiness, just confidence. It’s about
time that BIG men stand up and represent!
LargeInCharge.com: Who is the owner of your company?
We
are a family and faith based organization. My father, Joe D.
Reaves, and I own the company.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your company?
BIGWorldWear is a company, a movement, and a ministry. In the
beginning, we didn’t care about money. It was all about serving God
and sending positive messages out into our community and the world.
Therefore, our first line of T-shirts was all spiritually and
scripture based. People loved them. We tried to deny it, but a
ministry was formed.
As we grew, our need to organize
turned us into a company. We maintained our initial customer base,
but realized that something was missing. More and more people kept
asking for bigger sizes with inspirational messages, but without the
scriptures. We incorporated this feedback into our second line.
Thus, the BIG line/movement was born. The BIG line developed a more
secular following and encouraged us keep looking for new avenues to
explore.
LargeInCharge.com: How did your company begin?
My
father designed the first shirt back in 1997. It was really
simple. It read, “COOL Like Him.” Him was Jesus Christ. COOL was
an acronym which stood for Christ Omnipotent Omnipresent Lord. He
didn’t believe in taking money for the shirts so he gave them away
for free. That was the best marketing/advertising strategy ever.
People started wearing and talking about the shirts. The rest, as
they say, is history.
LargeInCharge.com: How did your company get its name?
Our
mission and vision were “BIG.” We wanted to make fashion that had
meaning and purpose in the “World.” It had to be different from
other companies. Our t-shirts, or “Wear,” brought inspiring
messages to the people and the world.
LargeInCharge.com: Does your company have a motto or
slogan; and what does it mean?
Our motto is “In a BIG world,
everything is BIG.” It simply means that everything and everyone in
the world has a purpose and a place. They should be accepted and
respected for what and who they are.
LargeInCharge.com: How long have you been in
business?
We’ve been operating for 12 years. We’ve been on-line for 4 years.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your clothing
products?
T-shirts are our claim to fame and
fortune.
LargeInCharge.com: What made you decide to make Plus
Sized clothing?
Our
customers demanded it. They kept asking for larger sizes and we saw
a need that most companies were not meeting. I hate to say it, but
the customer is always right.
LargeInCharge.com: Who designs the clothing you sell?
Given that we are a small company,
we both do.
LargeInCharge.com: Are you currently looking for new
designers?
We
are always looking for great ideas.
LargeInCharge.com: What is the size range on your
clothing and do you custom?
We
start at a children’s Small and go all the way up to an adult’s 6XL.
LargeInCharge.com: Does you company do Fashion shows,
if so where?
Yes. So far we’ve participated in fashion shows at the NAAFA
Conference in 2007 and the Vegas BBW Bash in 2008.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you have a website and a
hardcopy catalogs; how do we obtain a hard copy catalog?
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your latest
fashions and any up & coming products?
Designers never talk about their lines before they are revealed. We
will not break that tradition. However, I will say that this year
we are revamping some old favorites and they will be sexier than
ever!
LargeInCharge.com: Overall, What are your best
sellers?
BIG
Love
BIG
Daddy
BIG
& Sexy
BIG
Girls Have More Fun
Real Men Love BIG Women
WDJS
LargeInCharge.com: Has your company or clothing ever
been showcased on Television or in Print?
Yes, but it was not as BIG as Large in Charge Magazine.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you feel the fashion industry
is doing a good job providing quality clothing for Big Women?
I
think improvements have been made over the last 10 years. However,
there is so much more that can and should be done. BIGWorldWear is
doing its part.
LargeInCharge.com: What are the ordering options that
customers have?
Customers can order shirts by going to the website or contacting us
via email,
big@bigworldwear.com
LargeInCharge.com: How long does it take for a
purchase to be received?
If
we have the shirts in stock, it should take no more than 2 weeks.
If they have to be made, the turn around time is 4-6 weeks.
LargeInCharge.com: What are your refund options?
As long as the shirt has not been
worn, s/he can receive a refund up to 30 days after the date of
purchase.
LargeInCharge.com: How do you find your models?
Believe it or not, most of our models find us. They like the
t-shirts and they ask to be our models. We have also advertised on
MySpace.
LargeInCharge.com: How can someone apply to be a
model for your website or catalog?
LargeInCharge.com: What qualifications do you look
for when choosing a model?
We
look for people who believe in our company and our t-shirts. If
that quality is there, it makes the difference. People over 18
years of age, from all sizes and races, will be considered. We
believe in diversity.
LargeInCharge.com: Who does the photography on your
website?
Again, we are a small company. So, the owners share that
responsibility.
LargeInCharge.com: Did you construct the website with
the release of your clothing line or did it come after?
We
developed the website after the BIG clothing line. At that point,
we had enough designs to publish.
LargeInCharge.com: Was the site an automatic success
or did it take time to kick off?
It
took some time before people started visiting the site with any
regularity. Word of mouth, vendor events, a presence on MySpace,
and links on other sites all helped to increase site traffic.
LargeInCharge.com: Name some designers and companies
you admire?
We
would love to work with artists like Teri Boat from
Teriscreations.com, Reubenesq, and JNess. Nelly’s Applebottoms is
the ultimate, of course.
LargeInCharge.com: What are the most important
elements to running a successful Online Clothing Company...quality;
comfort...what is important/ what is not?
Our
definition of running a successful company may be different from
that of other companies. We believe that success is following your
beliefs and values. It’s identifying a need in the world and
finding the necessary resources to fulfill that need. It’s engaging
your customers and listening to their feedback. Not only will these
elements increase sales, but they will increase your customers’
respect for your business.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you feel clothing options for
people of size have made progress in the last 10 years, do you think
the internet is part of that progress!
Yes, the internet has helped
greatly in this area. What’s made more of an impact is the fact
that BIG people feel more free to be themselves. They accept and
love themselves more than ever before and they are expressing that
in numerous ways. BIG people have BIG Money. They are letting
designers and retailers know that they are dissatisfied with their
options. Designers and retailers are starting to listen.
LargeInCharge.com: How has the internet helped your
business?
The
internet has helped BIGWorldWear.com to market and advertise in a
BIG way. We are able to network and connect with people all over
the world.
LargeInCharge.com: What can the readers at
LargeInCharge do to help support your business?
They can do 2 things. First, they can buy more of our t-shirts.
Second, they can spread the word about how BIGWorldWear.com is
representing BIG people in the BIG world.

size who want to model?
Just
go and do it! you can use every excuse under the sun but at the end
of the day it's just an excuse. Don't miss out on something, this
could be the one thing to change your life for the better. Remember
quitting is not an option.
LargeInCharge.com: What plus size figure do you admire?
Mia
Amber and Queen Latifah.

Reviews, Interview, News and more from our new writer Super Sized Spanishfly Lynx.
Lynx
Garcia, also known as "SUPERSIZE SPANISHFLY", is a Latina BBW from
Queens NYC. Lynx is an activist speaking out against size
discrimination and began performing back in 1996 at social events
for big beautiful women and big handsome males and their admirers.
Her special mixture of sound held true as she sang, spat, danced and
performed spoken word, soon she was in demand by
Big and Beautiful parties nationwide. Lynx taking her "look"
and sound mainstream was rejected because of her size. She
did not let this break her spirit, hurt her confidence or minimize
her drive. Instead she rose up and started a public access show
(LYNX' LAIR) aired in Queens on TIME WARNER QPTV . Combination of
comedy and sexy style, she showcased underground artists of all
walks of life. The response to her show was PHENOMENAL....in less
than a year she has showcased many artist, some who moved to bigger
and better things.
Currently Lynx has caught the attention of Joey Mekkah of BLACK
SOLARIS ENTERTAINMENT and found herself on the Grandmaster MELLE
MEL's SOLO ALBUM "MUSCLES" featured on the hot latin hip-hop track
called 'DIMELO", she is the only collaboration on the album. Lynx
recently has started her own radio show on EXTRAVAGANGSTARADIO.COM
called Ladies Night. EXTRAVAGANGSTARADIO is #1 on the
itunes network.

The Adventures of Phatgurl
by Emily Suzanne
Smiltneck
The
Adventures Of Phatgurl
is a serial collection of stories about the adventures of Jany, a
plus-sized young woman who, in desperation, places an ad on a
personals website. As she embarks on her dates, she meets many
different kinds of men who expect many different things from her.
Some of her adventures are wildly amusing and others are more
serious and even sad.
If you have any
ideas or experiences, funny or otherwise, that you would like to see
depicted in a future Phatgurl story, please e-mail me at
emilysuzanne20@hotmail.com.
I will do my very best to incorporate all reader ideas into future
columns. Thanks!

with my luck,
no where near where i’m from, I’m sure. washington? as in the
state? i have the worst luck when it comes to women, especially
ones who are smart, and you seem like you might be. catchy little
ploy in the ad, by the way. i hope you really don’t think that
lowly of yourself, but if you do, that’s cool, I guess, because
you’re every guy’s dream woman. humor aside, though, i’m just
looking for someone to get to know and see where things go. i’m
sort of socially awkward, to be honest, so it can be hard for me to
meet people, but at least i can admit it. that’s the first step,
right? I don’t really mind if you do live far away. we can start
to get to know each other and maybe at some point in the future we
can meet. even if we live close, that might be a good idea.
You really
don’t seem all that socially awkward. Granted, we haven’t met yet,
but I think you’d do fine. Unfortunately, your assessment of your
luck seems to be right on target, because I don’t live anywhere near
Washington. I don’t have a problem getting to know each other
online or whatever, though. You never know what might happen.
well, i’m glad
i haven’t scared you away yet, anyway. sorry to hear we’re not
close together. geography tends to derail most of my attempts at
relationships, probably because it’s a lot easier for me to meet
people far away so I don’t have to face them in person. but, we
will just do what we can. do you have any messengers or anything?
easier to chat that way. you can find me on yooha- my username is
hartart1976. if you use yooha, add me. if not, get it. now. we
can have an online date.
I don’t
generally respond well to orders, but just for you, I decided to
try. I have a Yooha account now. My username is phat_gurl. I
haven’t figured out how to add anyone yet- well, haven’t tried,
really. So, you can add me. My turn to give orders. Talk to you
soon.
Yooha Messenger
hartart1976 would like to add you to his/her Friends list. AcceptDecline
You have
accepted hartart1976’s Friends request. He/she is now your
Friend.
hartart1976:
hey, how are
you? i see you got me added.
phat_gurl:
Yup. I’m okay.
You?
hartart1976:
lonely. sad.
you should send me a picture to cheer me up.
phat_gurl:
A picture? You
want me to draw you a picture? Of what?
hartart1976:
no, dummy, i
want you to send me a picture of you. i want to know what
you look like. send me one. now!
phat_gurl:
Now that you
called me a dummy, I’m not sending you anything. Anyway,
you’d probably rather not know what I look like. And I knew
what you meant. I was kidding.
hartart1976:
i wanna know and
i wanna know now!
phat_gurl:
Cool your jets,
dude. Why don’t we just chat for now. Maybe next time I’ll
send you a pic. You live in Washington, you either have a
really weird last name or you like art—I’m intrigued. Tell
me more about you. What is your name supposed to mean? Are
you, like, an artist or something?
hartart1976:
it means my
heart is tart.
phat_gurl:
I’m beginning to
see what you meant by socially awkward.
hartart1976:
i work as an art
dealer. for a museum. no artist. are you a famous artist?
phat_gurl:
Yes, I’m a
artist. A famous one. Because all famous artists try to
find dates online. No, I’m not an artist. I work in an art
gallery, though.
hartart1976:
have you had sex
with a famous artist?
phat_gurl:
What!?! No! I
mean, even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you. That’s just
ridiculous. Famous artists don’t just go around having sex
with random people. Especially people like me. I can’t
believe I’m even responding to this!
hartart1976:
sure they do.
everyone knows that artists have a lot of sex. and what do
you mean, people like you?
phat_gurl:
People like me.
You know, poor, unimportant, fat…
hartart1976:
what? you’re
fat? never mind, then!
are you there?
where’d you go?
aw, come on. i was kidding. i knew you were, i saw your
personalz ad. i’m not dumb. not that dumb anyway. i like
you. send me a pic. a naked one.
phat_gurl:
You’re a pig!
hartart1976:
oink!
phat_gurl:
OK, fine. I’ll
send you a picture of me. NOT a naked one, piggie. But you
have to promise you won’t stop talking to me. I don’t trust
you anymore.
Picture file
meinreddress.jpg sent to hartart1976.
hartart1976 has
accepted meinreddress.jpg.
phat_gurl:
Are you there?
I had a reason when I stopped talking to you.
Maybe you did,
too. I guess you didn’t like the picture.
Martin?
hartart1976 has
signed out.
phat_gurl:
I’m sorry you
didn’t like it. If you ever change your mind, let me know.
Jany stood up from her computer desk and stretched. What an idiot.
She’d known he wouldn’t like the picture. Most guys didn’t, unless
they knew ahead of time what she might look like. She should be
used to it. The characteristic tears didn’t flood her eyes,
though. She waited for them, felt a little unsettled when they
didn’t come. Finally, she shrugged her shoulders and went into the
kitchen.
Once there, she didn’t really know what to do with herself. She’d
already made plans with Mala to go to the sandwich shop next door to
the gallery for lunch, so she couldn’t busy herself with making
something. She could do dishes, except that there weren’t enough
dirty ones to make it worth filling the sink up with water. She
slumped at the table and stared vacantly at the shelf of art
supplies under the window. Maybe she’d paint or something to take
her mind off Martin. No. Suddenly she didn’t have the energy to
stand up. She closed her eyes and thumped her head down on the
table.
And
then the tears came.
She
wished with all she was worth that Michael would call. He was a
voice of reason whenever she was consumed by self doubt and
sadness. She could call him, of course, but he had so
many things going on that she didn’t want to bother him. Besides,
why would he want to talk to her, really? She didn’t have a whole
lot to offer at the moment. It was better not to be a burden. She
sat at the table and cried for another hour before she was able to
stand up, stumble into her bedroom, collapse on her bed, and start
crying anew. Why did men have to be so stupid and shallow? Why was
she unworthy of love, just because she didn’t look like a
supermodel?
Jany didn’t realize she had fallen asleep until the e-mail alert on
her computer sounded and roused her. She looked at her alarm clock
and saw that it was after ten. She stretched and stood, undressed
for bed, then sat down at her computer. Might as well check her
e-mail before she went back to sleep. She had a few random junk
e-mails and a note from Mala that she’d be ten or fifteen minutes
late in the morning. And then there was, of all things, an e-mail
from Michael. Red eyes and tear-stained cheeks and all, she found
herself smiling at the sight of his name.
It
was just a simple note to say hi, and he wanted to know if she was
busy, or if he could maybe call her! Somehow, her mental anguish
had reached him and he had known that she needed him. She was sure
of it. She hit reply and wrote to him that he could call her
absolutely any time he wanted to. After she had sent the message,
she shut down her computer and climbed into bed with a book, making
sure that her phone was within easy reach.
It
was less than five minutes later when her phone rang. Instead of
sounding depressed and disinterested when she answered the phone,
the way she wanted to, so he would ask what was wrong and she could
talk about the whole thing, she sounded excited and almost bubbly.
It was impossible for her not to be giddy and gleeful when she heard
his voice.
“Hey, Babe, how ya doing?” he asked.
“I’m–I’m okay. Not too bad. You?”
“Busy, as usual, but pretty good, all things considered. I just
wanted to call and hear your voice.”
His
words made her heart jump up and down a few times, probably clapping
its hypothetical hands. She had to pause and breathe deeply before
she continued, to soothe her nerves.
“I’m glad you did. It’s always good to hear your voice, too.
Always.”
“That’s good to know. So whatcha been up to? Any news on the
romance front?”
“Ha. Ha, ha, ha. Not exactly, other than that I am more sure than
ever that there will never be any romance in my life. The only
decent guys I can seem to find live so far away there’s no point.
And even some of them are jerks.” She quickly told him what had
happened with Martin.
“So
wait a minute. You were talking with him on an instant messenger,
he had a general idea what you looked like already, you sent him a
picture, and he didn’t respond, so you assumed it was the picture
that did it? Is that really reasonable?”
“What else would it be?”
“Oh, I don’t know. His Internet service cut out. His computer
froze. He had to go and just decided not to respond—he did say he
was socially awkward. He was turned on and was having a hard time
typing with one han—”
“Okay, stop. That’s not what happened, I’m sure, but I guess
it might not have been his fault. It’s just hard for me to believe
that someone could really like me. No one else ever has. Not as
anything more than a one-time thing, anyway.”
“Do
I not count at all here?”
“I—well—of course you do. But you live far away and you’ve never
even met me in person and it’s just not the same. You know what I
mean,”
“This guy hasn’t met you in person, either. Think about that. Stop
being so damn pessimistic.”
“I
can’t help it. I’m sorry. It just feels like there’s no other way
to be.”
“Do
you need me to tell you about all the things I’d do to you if I
didn’t live so far away, and if you weren’t so young it’d make me
feel like a pedophile?”
In
spite of herself, Jany giggled.
“No, that’s okay. You don’t have to,”
“That’s good, because you would definitely blush if I did. In fact,
I’d probably blush, too. You are a beautiful, sensual woman, and
you’re smart, and you’re kind, and any man in the world would be
lucky to have someone like you even talk to him.”
Jany was grinning broadly by the time he had finished speaking.
“Better now?”
“Yeah, I’m okay. Thanks. Sometimes I guess I just need someone to
kick me in the pants and get me out of my little slumps.”
“Anytime. I’ve gotta go now, and get some sleep, but it was good
talking to you, as always. Tomorrow, talk to this Martin guy and
see what’s up. I’ll betcha anything he just flaked and it had
nothing to do with your picture at all. And he can’t say much,
anyway, if he didn’t send you a picture of his own.”
“True, I guess. All right, have a good night. Sweet dreams.”
“You, too, Babe. Someday when I have more time, I’ll really make
you feel better. I promise. Night.”
Jany hung up the phone, turned out the light, and spent half the
night lying awake and composing the e-mail she would send to Martin
in the morning.

phat_gurl:
Oh, hi. You’re
still speaking to me, I see.
hartart1976:
pictures!
phat_gurl:
I am not sending
you anything until you actually talk to me. Well, chat to
me, I guess. In sentences, not commands.
hartart1976:
send me
pictures!
phat_gurl:
What happened
the other day? How come you stopped talking to me after I
sent you the pic?
hartart1976:
i didn’t.
phat_gurl:
Yes, you did. I
sent you the picture and you never said anything and I asked
where you were and you never answered. Obviously, you
didn’t like the picture, so why are you talking to me again
now?
hartart1976:
i liked the pic.
i was looking at it. and then i had to go. that’s all.
phat_gurl:
You didn’t even
say bye.
hartart1976:
i told you i was
socially awkward. sheesh. anyway, even if i didn’t like
the picture, it doesn’t mean i can’t talk to you anymore. i
can talk to ugly people.
phat_gurl:
So you think I’m
ugly.
hartart1976:
NO! i don’t get
people, especially women.
phat_gurl:
Sorry. I just
don’t feel very beautiful sometimes, and that tends to make
things difficult for me, dating-wise.
hartart1976:
you are
beautiful.
phat_gurl:
Not to most
people. To most people I am just fat.
hartart1976:
so lose weight.
phat_gurl:
It’s not that
easy. Anyway, if I have to lose weight so someone likes me,
I don’t really want them to like me. You think I should
lose weight?
hartart1976:
grrr. no. you
are fine. if you don’t want to lose weight, find someone
who likes you how you are.
phat_gurl:
I can’t, so far.
hartart1976:
i don’t know
what to say. you shoot me down every time. be alone then.
be sad.
phat_gurl:
I think I have
to get going.
hartart1976:
no. send
pictures.
phat_gurl:
I don’t want to
send pictures. I just want to feel like someone likes me.
hartart1976:
i like you.
that’s why i want pics. naked ones.
phat_gurl:
No, I mean I
want someone to like me for who I am, not how I look. See,
that’s the thing. Everyone who doesn’t like me doesn’t like
me because I’m fat. But everyone who does like me ONLY
likes me because I’m fat. It’s all about what I look like
and not who I am.
hartart1976:
ok, let’s go on
a date.
phat_gurl:
Yeah, right. I
can’t exactly hop on a plane and be there in time for
dinner.
hartart1976:
no, i will tell
you how. what do you want for dinner? what do you like?
phat_gurl:
What do you
mean? I like all kinds of things.
hartart1976:
if i was there,
what would you want for dinner? where would we go? what
would we talk about?
phat_gurl:
I don’t know,
there’s a Chinese place on the corner that’s really good.
And we’d probably talk about art, since it’s something we’re
both interested in.
hartart1976:
ok. no work
tomorrow, it’s saturday. you go get chinese and i’ll go get
chinese and we’ll come back on here and chat about art while
we eat. buy yourself some flowers while you’re out, too,
and a candle. make it romantic.
phat_gurl:
Are you
serious? Really?
hartart1976:
yes.

Jany ran into her bedroom and shed her work clothes. She started
pulling on a sweatsuit at first but then decided she should dress up
for her “date.” Instead, she donned a skirt and sweater, tucked her
keys and phone into her purse, and danced out the door. She was
back home in forty-five minutes, with a takeout container under one
arm and a shopping bag dangling off of her elbow. She lit the
candles, put the flowers in a vase, and logged back on to Yooha.

hartart1976:
i’m back.
phat_gurl:
Cool, me too.
hartart1976:
what did you
get?
phat_gurl:
Orange chicken
and an egg roll.
hartart1976:
i got moo goo

phat_gurl:
I don’t even
know what that is. lol
hartart1976:
it’s good.
flowers?
phat_gurl:
I just got a
bouquet of wildflowers from the shop on the corner. And I
got a couple of white lavender-scented candles. Tall ones,
in holders.
hartart1976:
good. eat.
phat_gurl:
Um, okay. And?
hartart1976:
we talk. about
art. but first, tell me what you are wearing.
phat_gurl:
Just a sweater,
a yellow and black one. And a black skirt.
hartart1976:
you look like a
bumble bee.
phat_gurl:
, thanks.
hartart1976:
i like bumble
bees.
phat_gurl:
Okay. lol So,
who’s your favorite artist? Is there any kind of particular
kind of art youn deal in?
hartart1976:
i don’t talk
about politics, religion, or art.
phat_gurl:
But I thought
you said…
hartart1976:
i lied. i can
do that. i’m socially awkward.
phat_gurl:
Whatever. I
thought you said you were into art.
hartart1976:
i am. i just
don’t talk about it. if you don’t like what i like, we will
fight.
phat_gurl:
Okay. So what
shall we talk about?
hartart1976:
i like to talk
about all kinds of things. we can talk about cars or you or
where we live or your breasts—pretend i am looking down your
cleavage right now, by the way—or our jobs or movies or
books or your ass…
phat_gurl: Okay, okay. Let’s just talk about books. I
read a lot.
They had eaten and talked for another two hours. At the end of the
night, Martin had just disappeared again, but this time Jany was
expecting it, so it didn’t upset her. And he had kissed her before
he’d disappeared. Well, not really, of course, but he had told her
to pretend he was. All in all, it was definitely the best date
she’d had. She went to bed that night without checking her
Personalz mail, for once. Her pretend date had gone so well, there
didn’t seem to be much point in rejoining reality.
True to
my word from last month’s article, I still haven’t
gorged myself on a a huge plateful of daily news. Every
so often, I get a blurb from someone else’s radio across
the office. Other than that, I’m clean. As my old
economics teacher said, it really does set you free in a
manner. First, you don’t hear any more bad news.
Second, you don’t get reminded of all the bad news you
already heard.
At this
time I find myself helping my mother as she broke her
arm about two weeks ago. It’s in a place on the arm
where casting is not an option so we have to immobilize
it, thus pretty much immobilizing her. I have had over
the last few days more opportunity to watch movies than
I have had for several months. The last time was in
December when (and I am no kidding) she broke her other
arm. She went out of that cast on a Friday, breakage of
the other arm on the following Tuesday. Trust me, I’ve
heard it all by now.
Back on
point, I have been watching the Band of Brothers HBO
series from a few years back. At one point, one of the
characters becomes immobilized with fear. Terror
blindness occurs and he fails to function as a soldier.
One night in a fox hole, one of his commanders stops to
talk with him. He asks how he is, to which the
character replies, “Sir, I’m scared .” The commanding
officer looks at his subordinate and says something like
this. “You know what your problem is ? You think
you’re still alive. You’re not, you’re already dead,
you just don’t know it yet. You see, we’re all dead out
here. It is by accepting that fact, that we can do what
we have to, the only way to accept what we have to do
without fear… is to accept that we are all already
dead.” The officer then leaves the private in a
stunned, but in an enlightened state of mind.
Over the
last few months, realizing through work and private life
that time is short. I was outside tonight. Sixty-eight
degrees, the wind was blowing, it was a perfect moment.
I absorbed like a sponge. I felt the renewal in my
lungs as I breathed deeply. I see the trees budding
their leaves and the grass start to darken with the
sun’s help. Once again we have survived the cold of
winter and have emerged to repeat our actions again. I
recall a short article written in People Magazine about
Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s son, whose life ended in such a
tragic way on the set of the movie that would at last
make him an international superstar, The Crow. The
article was an interview that was done a mere two weeks
before his death. In that article he speaks about the
odd nature of life, how we feel it will go one forever
but in reality is so limited in scope. He says “how
many Christmas’ or Easter’s do we really have ? 80 ?
If we’re lucky. Eighty in the length of time that is
eternity is nothing. A blink of the eye. We have to
savor every sunrise and sunset, because who knows what
can happen.
Haunting
words of truth from someone who it would seem understood
the finite nature of his own existence. Even the Bible
tells us that we are arrogant to believe that we have
one more moment on this earth. We make our plans for
the weekend or next week or next month without a thought
that we may be overstepping our bounds.
I know
what your’re thinking… Geez, this guy needs some meds..
NOW, what a bummer.
In order
for me to make my point, I have to get a good set up.
Stay with me for another couple of lines. Do I think we
should all worry about our impending death ? NO… not my
point. Do I think that we should not make plans for
next week as we may no longer be alive ? NO… not my
point. Do I think we should do whatever we want,
because if were all already dead then it doesn’t matter
anyway ? NO.. definitely not my point.
My Point
is this. There are a great many times that we ponder on
death, failure, a huge amount of disasters that may get
us all. However, 99.9999% of the time we are always
wrong in those fears. Fear is, for lack of a better way
to put it, a complete waste of time and energy.
We are
conditioned to fear things as children. Don’t do this,
don’t do that, don’t touch the stove, put on your
helmet, blah, blah, blah. We are not, for the most part
raised seeing disaster around us with the mentality of
what opportunities are there to do some good. Use
crisis to your advantage. NO.. I don’t mean it like the
government means it in that fear and crisis are used to
get its people compliance. I mean that in any crisis
there are many chances to do good things. Accepting
that we can do good things frees ourselves, and changes
our focus. Our intent is no longer to guarding from the
inevitable to production of the possibilities, which in
turn, changes the inevitable outcome. Pretty cool… Huh
?
In the
way the soldier was told that he must accept that he is
already dead to be able to function. We too, must
accept the truth that as a people, as a nation, and as a
world, we have already come out of this crisis.
Accepting that, you can then do what is necessary to
making that a reality.
For me,
I guess it comes down to accepting the idea that I am
actually dead. Knowing that each day is my last. Each
holiday is the last. Each article I write is the last.
Every day at work is my last. Each time I speak to my
friends is the last time. The last time I mowed the
lawn was the last time I would be able to do it. What
better what to free myself to do, say, feel, write, and
express what I need to without fear.
Like a
person who has faced their own death and lived to tell
about it, a renewal of the spirit occurs. A rebirth
happens when my eyes open. A sincere peace falls over
me knowing that I have finally understood that the world
doesn’t need changing first. I do.
It is
accepting that I have died allows me the opportunity to
live more in a day then I did before in a week, a month,
or a year. Maybe we really can fit a lifetime into one
day.
So what
special happened today ? I woke up, after that the rest
of the day was gravy, baby.
Take
Care and God Bless to all of you.
Xander's Recipe of the Month
Stuffed Bone in Ham
"Scored with a simple but delicious stuffing, this glazed ham makes
such an elegant statement when you set it on your holiday table!
It's become a Yuletide tradition at our house."
INGREDIENTS
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
• 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
• 1/2 cup butter or margarine
• 1/4 cup egg substitute
• 3/4 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon rubbed sage
• 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 6 cups soft bread cubes
• 1 (12 pound) shank fully cooked bone-in ham
• GLAZE:
• 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
• 1/4 cup orange juice
• 1/4 cup dark corn syrup
DIRECTIONS
1. In a large skillet, saute the onion, celery and parsley in butter
until vegetables are tender. In a bowl, combine the egg substitute,
milk, sage, thyme and salt. Add bread cubes and vegetable mixture;
toss to combine.
2. From the cut end of the ham, cut five parallel wedges, about
1-1/2-in. apart, 1/2-in. wide and 1-1/2-in. deep. Repeat in the
opposite direction, making diamond shapes. Spoon stuffing into
slits. Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Cover loosely
with a foil tent. Bake at 325 degrees F for 2-1/4 hours.
3. In a saucepan, combine the glaze ingredients. Cook and stir over
medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove foil from ham; drizzle
glaze over top. Bake 30-45 minutes longer or until a meat
thermometer reads 140 degrees F. Let stand for 10 minutes before
slicing.
Cher was born in Los
Angeles California in 1955. Being adopted by wonderful parents she
grew up in the city of Encino, and was always surrounded by loving
caring family and friends. Growing up with a thin mother, who was
always trying to get Cher to lose weight, diets of all types,
sending her to fat camp, bribing her, and
not ever having sweets in their home.
Growing up Cher never was lacking in friends and boyfriends who
loved her personality and her kindness.
Guys in her life always were saying your so pretty but why don't you
lose some weight. This she heard all of her life but her weight just
would go up and down.
Cher has always loved seeing others happy and helping others to find
their inner self and beauty.
Ten years ago, she found the plus size community and she knew this
is where she would focus on helping others who were like her and had
some of her experiences and pain that she went through.
Cher has been in the community working with others for size
acceptance. She was seen on "Dr.Phil, "Good Morning
America","Entertainment Tonight", "Russian, British, Japanese,and
Viet Vietnamese Television". Also a documentary filmed at the Las
Vegas Bash on the Travel channel, and Current TV, a online station,
with numerous radio interviews talking about size acceptance.
She was a promoter for the number one BBW hip hop club in
California, and seeing people come into the club and make new
friends and feel good about themselves warmed her heart.
Her love for helping others to feel better about themselves and to
help mainstream accept the plus size community is her focus and
goal. She is Vice President of "Hollywood Cure For Pain" a celebrity
movement to help those who suffer in chronic pain. She is now
showing mainstream that "Big Girls can rock the Red Carpet"! Besides
being a wife, mother and activist, playing with her Chocolate Lab
Ruby is what she loves best!
2009 Runway Magazine LA Oscar Gifting Suite
- Held at the Famous
Liberace Penthouse in Hollywood was the Hottest Ticket in Town!
Article by:
Cher Rue
Hollywood— Runway Magazine, which holds seasonal fashion events and
high profile mixers for celebrities, designers, models and
entertainment industry representatives, has been awarded the
contract to hold the 2009 Oscar Gifting Suites. The two-day affair
had bodyguards, security, valet, open bar, sushi, celebrities, top
designers, a live broadcast with many media outlets from around the
world and Hollywood. James Buccelli CEO of Runway Magazine does it
every time! The Gifting suite is not like all the other gifting
suites.
Here is a video of event.
From when you pull up in the valet and see all the paparazzi around
the Runway Magazine Oscar Penthouse to the Limos and police escorts
up the private elevator right on to the red carpet through the
penthouse on to a deck with private pool overlooking a view of 360
degrees of the Hollywood hills to Downtown LA with a full premium
all you can drink wet bar to the all you can eat 5 star food buffet.
If you weren’t a celebrity you sure felt like on there. The
Penthouse had a buzz of electricity and optimism in the air.
Compared to the other gift suites we attended, there was no match!
The Runway Magazine suite was simply electrifying. I haven’t seen so
many celebrities in one place unless it was an actual awards show.
The celebrities seemed at ease with the cocktails, food, fireplace,
view and media swarming all over. The event was open from 1pm to 6pm
both days, however about hundred or so celebs and vips stayed late
into the night networking and talking about future films, TV shows
and records coming out. “We are going to have another one soon. We
do at least two fashion shows a month and about 6 gifting suites a
year”. We also try to keep it as green as possible. You can find us
at www.runwaymagazinela.com” said James Buccelli.
Not everyone nominated for an Academy Award will take home an Oscar
on Sunday, but even the losers don't have to go home empty handed.
Lavish spa vacations, Expensive jewels by Froot Jewelry, plastic
surgery treatments, expensive designer boots by Capelta, $2000
dollar Bottles of Vodka, sweaters and shirts from Notions of
Emotions and Over The Edge Talent Group, Free Tans and Spa Products
from Epitome Salon, Monavie and Moxxor give aways, Beautiful dresses
from famous designer Tal Sheyn, Elegant hand bags by Addore,
aromatherapy purifiers and vacation getaways by hydrodynamics, Green
eco friendly Globo bags by you can find agreenday.org, the amazine
food by Sashime and all the premium alcohol you can drink from Andie
at Hpnotiq & Pama, gift bags donated by Walt Disney and Shoes For
The Stars, Elizabeth Diaz Prado Hats, Private Jet getaways provided
by Halcyon Jets are just some of the products available at gift
suites set up at the Runway Magazine Liberace Penthouse in
Hollywood.
There was no sign of a global economic crisis at GBK 'Circus of the
Senses' gift suite where invited guests can receive "more than
$20,000 in gifted luxury," according to the company.
James Buccelli, President of Runway Magazine and Runway Events,
admitted that some may see it as just the rich getting richer,
however, the companies that are giving away the extravagant gifts
are hoping for celebrity exposure and branding in return.
Celebrities get to learn about new products and the business gets a
return of investment. Pretty simple…The earned value from
participating in a suite like this is extremely high.
Special Thanks to James Buccelli CEO of Runway Magazine, Jeff and
Linda Karinja from Primary Action, Brad Barker from Runway, Tommy
Bruno from Runway, Mandy Lile from Runway, Mike Rogers and Jamie
from JStar Media, Gordon, Julie and the crew from real TV Films,

More to Love
- a reality show
for the rest of us? Or another case of trash TV?
with
Stephanie Baham
"More to Love" is the name of a reality show FOX Television is
currently casting. The executive producers from "The Bachelor" and
"Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?" have developed a dating
reality show which will feature plus size women who are looking for
love. Here's an excerpt from the Hollywood Reporter:
Fox is developing the project with Mike Fleiss, the producer of
ABC's "The Bachelor." Indeed, the project has a similar format to
"Bachelor," where a group of women compete for one man (producers
describe him as a "Kevin James-type").
So of course, the women have to be the ones competing for one man.
I was hoping it'd be one plus size lady having the men compete for
her. Oh well. At least the guy is a "Kevin James type". That must
mean he's a comedian I assume? I like funny guys, don't you ladies?
According to co-executive producer, Mike Darnell, "This show is
going to get a lot of people talking. It may be a little
controversial, but I think it will mostly be positive."
Whenever I hear anyone from FOX use the word "controversial" I
usually brace myself for the worst. While I love FOX's animated
shows....their reality shows have a habit of turning into the Jerry
Springer show. At least Jerry admitted his show was trashy.
The Hollywood Reporter goes on to say: Contestants will do the
sort of activities seen on "Bachelor," but producers suspect Jacuzzi
or massage dates will take on a different perspective. "More to
Love" will have makeover aspects -- when contestants wear ballroom
gowns, for instance -- but Fleiss said the focus will not be on
physical improvement."
I think the Jacuzzi and massage dates will be eliminated all
together. After all, no one wants to see a plus size person in a
bathing suit or skimpy clothing right? I'm sure that's what they
mean by "different perspective".
As you can probably tell, I am not thrilled about the show. I don't
believe it's going to be as positive as they say. Reality shows
rarely are. But what really turned me off was the casting
information. It is my opinion that they are seeking ladies who are
brave enough to go on television...but who have some self-esteem
issues that FOX television can exploit.
The casting information includes a description of the show, which
includes the statement that FOX is here to "help us". I guess
without FOX TV we can't find dates, right? Then it goes on to say
that they're looking for women who are "at least the age of 21 but
appear under 33". So FOX won't mind rescuing us big ladies from our
unsuccessful dating lives as long as we look young, eh?
The casting questionnaire goes on to ask questions such as have you
ever "had your weight hold you back" or "has your weight ever been
an issue in a relationship?" It's obvious to me they are looking
for ladies who have had struggles with their weight and are willing
to exploit their own struggles on television.
I don't think a reality show for plus sized people is a step
forward. More leading roles in major motion pictures would be a
step forward. More plus size people in the fashion industry is a
step forward. If actors & actresses in Hollywood were always cast
based on talent alone & not looks, that would be a step forward. But
a reality show? A reality show on FOX....the people responsible for
"My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancée"? No thank you. I could do without.
I encourage everyone to read about the show for themselves at
www.thehollywoodreporter.com You may be of the opinion
that this is a step forward. You might even be a lady who wants to
be cast on this program. If you are, go to
www.bigheartcasting.com where Doron Ofir Casting will accept
your application & photograph. And may the force be with you. Ever
see a plus size hero in Star Wars? Now that would be a step forward.
I am a former plus-size model and stage performer. I have written
articles that have appeared in local newspapers, college magazines
and I was a sports editor for my school newspaper. Currently I have
a book coming out in May 08, How to Make a Living Without a Job: the
Guide to Professional Temping. It will be available online through
Amazon and can be ordered through Barnes & Noble or Borders. I split
my time between the Bay Area, CA and Houston, TX.
A Real Girl Interrupted with
Iolande Vitt Argent
Do you remember the
premise of the movie; you had always “pixie faced can do no wrong”
Winnona Ryder running around on the pretext of being bi-polar of
sorts causing trouble with Angelina Jolie after blatantly being
misdiagnosed? Well this is the real life tale of a true girl who was
interrupted by a diagnosis that was right on the money.
Jody Goody, was a
brash, in your face, big girl that took the UK to the edge and back
again after showing up on the Big Brother series. Jody was
essentially the odd man out; but she did her best to fit in; well
that’s not how it turned out.
Jade Goody's main
function, as she put it herself, was to be an "escape goat". By
American standards she was the sideshow "bearded lady". In reality
(TV & life) she was just the tool used to rile up the vindictive
rage of the mob and their tribunes in the Red Tops. At one point the
polls suggested that she was more unpopular than Saddam Hussein.
This violence stemmed
from rigged stunts pulled by fellow house mates inside the "BB"
house. In one episode Jade Goody found herself in bed with her male
housemate, PJ, who ran away, shrieking. Then there was her “drunken
striptease” in a drinking game rigged by the male contestants which
forced even UK’s Channel 4 to blank the screen. The next day the
headlines blared, "Here she is: fat-rolled, Michelin girl Jade in
all her preposterous lack of glory." "Naked as the day Dr
Frankenstein made her." Even her then boyfriend opted in for his
fifteen seconds of fame: "She's a sex-crazed, lying, two-timing
drunken tart, and I hope I never see her again."
Such was the public
venom it was feared that things might get dangerously out of hand.
Some people actually traveled across England to the BB house, where
they waved placards and greeted her emergence, spilling out of a
pink dress several sizes too small, with chants of "burn the pig".
Channel 4 was even reported to be considering smuggling her out of
the country for her own safety.
But, no sooner had she
hit rock bottom then she bounced back up again. The tabloid campaign
had developed into such an orgy of hate that it inspired retaliation
in her defense. Viewers, it seemed, warmed to her malapropisms,
guilelessness and obvious vulnerability. The readers said the rag
mags had gone too far; and the backpedalling began.
Suddenly, The Mirror. A
prominent UK paper congratulated itself on "a brilliantly conceived
clandestine campaign to drum up the sympathy vote for the divine Ms
Jade Goody". And the Sun, not to be outdone, lauched a rehabilitate
the "princess of Bermondsey" campaign. Both papers started the
bidding for her "story" at £100,000 – a figure that quickly
escalated.
This love/hate
relationship with the UK media using Goody as its primary weapon of
choice went on for a few years. Jade went through everything from
having her own fragrance called Shh! To being labeled a racist after
altercations with yet another Big Brother housemate in a second
visit to that series. She ended up on a good will tour of India as a
way to do damage control but this frenzied lifestyle would make most
people suicidal. Jade for all of this was unaffected. She was used
to scandal and craziness. She was born into it.
Jade Cerisa Lorraine
Goody was born in Bermondsey on June 5 1981. Her father, of mixed
race parentage, was a heroin addict and small-time pimp turned
career criminal that spent most of his life behind bars, eventually
dying of an overdose in the restroom of the KFC in Bournemouth. Her
paternal grandmother, who once ran a brothel, had a crack habit. Her
mother, Jackiey, the daughter of a market trader, was described in
her daughter's autobiography as a petty thief and "clipper" – a
woman who pretends to be a prostitute but runs off with the money
instead. Jackiey threw Jade's father out of the house when Jade was
18 months old, after discovering that he had hidden guns under her
cot. To add to the confusion, Jackiey herself later came out as a
lesbian.
Jade rolled her first
joint for her mother when she was four and she took her first puff
at age five; an event celebrated by her mother in a family
photograph. At about the same time Jackiey was seriously injured in
a motorcycle crash and lost the use of her left arm, as a result of
which Jade spent much of her childhood in the role of care giver.
Not that Jackiey appeared grateful. She once beat her daughter so
badly she ended up hospitalized.
Jade's schooling, not
surprisingly, was chaotic. She was expelled from one school after
her mother hit another mother, and from a second when her mother hit
a teacher. "Most of my mates at school would arrive home to see
their mum hanging out the washing or putting the dinner on," Jade
recalled. "I'd come round the corner hoping not to see another
police car outside the house."
It was not long before
Jade began dishing out the bullying herself, once biting off a chunk
of another girl's earlobe ("It wasn't a huge part of her earlobe or
anything, just the tip"). Hello, Mike Tyson.
But it was her
performance on Big Brother that made everything about Jade clear.
She was your typical cartoon airhead. The only difference was she
wasn’t a blonde Playboy bunny she was a bully and a big girl. Jade
Goody had little knowledge, a fact that she repeatedly shared with
the viewing audience. She thought that a ferret was a bird and
abscess a green French drink; that Pistachio painted the Mona Lisa;
that Sherlock Holmes invented the flush lavatory; that East Anglia
("East Angular" in Jade-speak) was abroad; and that Rio de Janeiro
was "a bloke, innit?"
She eventually attended
Bacon's College in Rotherhithe – one of Britain's first City
Technology colleges. Following her first appearance on Big Brother,
the college felt constrained to emphasize that its exam results had
improved since Jade left. She then attended a training course at the
Bosco Centre, an institution set up to "serve some of the most
disadvantaged and disengaged young people in the community". Again
association with Jade caused embarrassment as the centre pointed out
that some of its alumni had gone on to university.
After leaving school,
Jade eventually found employment as a dental nurse. When she applied
for a place in the Big Brother house, however, she was up to her
ears in debt, had recently been evicted from a flat in Rotherhithe
over £3,000 of unpaid rent and was facing jail over an unpaid
council tax bill.
Later, as well as her
earnings from celebrity appearances, exclusive interviews, product
marketing and the like, Jade Goody opened a beauty salon in
Hertfordshire. She chose the name Ugly's, thinking it would appeal
to the woman who thinks: "'I'm feeling ugly because I've got no
make-up on, no nails and hairy legs,' then they come into our salon
and we make them beautiful." The venture rapidly went bust.
But for all this media
manipulated muckraking; truth is stranger than fiction and real life
is worse than reality television will ever depict. Rumors began to
circulate of a "cancer scare" associated with Jade Goody. Naturally
the public thought “it was just another tasteless publicity stunt.”
However, the media that cried wolf went to the well one time too
often. After her initial diagnosis last year, it quickly became
clear that her cancer was at an advanced stage. Radical surgery
failed to stem its progress and early last month she was told it was
terminal.
But Jade Goody was not
a woman to go quietly into the good night. There was time for one
more twist. On February 22, in a blaze of publicity which was said
to have earned her close to £1 million, Jade Goody married a
21-year-old carpet fitter, Jack Tweed. In order that the couple
could spend their wedding night together, he was allowed to ignore
the 7pm curfew which was a condition of his early release from an
18-month prison sentence imposed for assaulting a 16-year-old boy
with a golf club.
Jane Goody, age 27,
succumbed to cervical cancer on March 23rd, Mother’s Day
in the UK.

found out that many clothing stores and online companies are
beginning to take up the slack. Creative BBW, SSBBW and
BHM's are making there own clothing or mix matching and finding
basic everyday wear and night club wear.
Making it affordable is what can be hard so showcase your
wonderful finds here. If your a regular shopper, sew your
own clothing or a designer showcase your clothing here by

Why I like this Product: This product was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is a
Nurse. It is perfect to help distribute weight and
prevents pressure points that springs can cause. I
love it, even though it looks a little weird it is one of
the most comfortable cushions I have used.
