While my child was hospitalized for some testing, I spent many hours
daily, in the Pediatric Unit of Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Located
in the Bronx New York. I saw how hard the many Nurses and
Staff worked with the children. They were very kind, I don't
have a complaint on the behavior of the staff. I noticed
the portable carts with, TV's, VCR's and older game systems, that
the nurses rotated through the pediatric unit for the children to
use.
Some of the game systems worked ok and some controllers were quite
worn out. I watched while my child tried to play a game but
that wasn't quite successful. They had some very nice Disney
movies and I was grateful that they did have them. My daughter
was not happy with the hospital TV stations. It was not
exactly geared for children. I had printed many puzzles mazes
and coloring pages for my daughter to do while for entertainment.
I sat back and wondered what would other children do who didn't have
those simple things to keep them entertained?
I then ask a head nurse (Raquel) would they take donations?
She said yes and told me anything would be appreciated (as long as
it was for children, No adult content) because many times the videos
& games get taken. I wondered what type of person (mother,
father) would take from a hospital? They only have a few
items to entertain the children who have to stay there. I
decided I would collect a few items and also donate some things I
already had.
With in a couple of days, LIC was able to donate 22 Children's books
and 17 video's to the Pediatric unit. I wished that more could
be done, but the nurses were very happy, especially with the books.
This gave another outlet for the children to be entertained.
LIC is hoping to find more ways to help Pediatric units in other
hospitals. We hope that we will be able to make a project that
will benefit the children.
